The Fifth team played our second match of the current season and first of 2012 on Sunday and fought hard but ultimately lost 0-4 to a strong Gardens II team.
So far it has been a character building season and we've come up against two strong teams. Three matches to go and we are now aiming for a Great Escape to avoid relegation!
Playing on Sunday were: Roger, Richard E, James and myself.
The results were as follows:
James & Chris lost to Gardens 2nd pair 3-6, 6-2, 8-10 (match tie-break)
Roger & Richard lost to Gardens 1st pair 3-6, 4-6
James & Chris lost to Gardens 1st pair 2-6, 4-6
Roger & Richard lost to Gardens 2nd pair 3-6, 5-7
Pre-match we saw first hand Richard's unique - and successful - court de-frosting technique and Roger's famous yellow match made it's first appearance of 2012.
Thanks to all for playing and I must give a shout out to Terry for much appreciated help on Saturday evening to cover the back of all four courts with the tarpaulin.
Three matches to go and lots to play for in Division R West!
Thanks

Here is the report from our home match against Banstead Downs III on Sunday 6th November.
They were in short a very strong team and won 4-0 - Ben and Richard made good team debuts but unfortunately I was quite badly off form (including a very rare broken string) and so Damian and I did not exactly set the world on fire! However thanks to all for playing.
Playing for team were: Chris Drew, Damian McFadden, Richard Embry, Ben McFarlane
Results:
Chris&Damian lost to BD3 2nd pair 6-0, 6-1
Ben&Richard lost to BD3 1st pair 6-4, 6-4
Chris&Damian lost to BD3 1st pair 6-1, 6-1
Ben&Richard lost to BD3 2nd pair 6-1, 6-3
The only way is up - I am hopeful that the other teams in division R West but not be as strong!
Thanks
Chris

Dear All,
Finally the 5th team have played some tennis - it feels like a long time since our last match in mid-November.
Alas we fell to a 3-1 defeat away against Claygate II in our first match of 2011. Playing for the team were: Chris Drew, Terry Oakes, Roger Tagholm and Vinay Reddy
Terry and I battled hard to beat their second pair after trailing by set and a break in a tightly contested match. Unfortunately their first pair were very good and were too strong for us in both matches. Roger and Vinay fought well and had some great rallies against the second pair - after leading by a break in the second set they broke when the Claygate pair served for the match at 5-4 only to see the home pair take the final two games.
The results were as follows:
Roger&Vinay lost to Claygate 1st Pair 0-6 1-6
Chris&Terry beat Claygate 2nd Pair 5-7 6-4 (10-6)
Chris&Terry lost to Claygate 1st Pair 1-6 3-6
Roger&Vinay lost to Claygate 2nd Pair 2-6 5-7
Thanks everyone for playing and to Roger for getting us over there and back in the Tagholm-mobile. Special thanks to Vinay for stepping in to play at short notice and making his debut representing the club.
I'll be in touch with further match dates as soon as possible. We have two matches remaining - both away - against Ember and Dorking.
Thanks

Dear All,
I am very pleased to say that the 5th team impressively beat Worcester Park ll 4-0 without the loss of a set in wet conditions at Wilton yesterday to notch up our first win of the season. It avenged our loss to their First team in the summer.
Playing for the team were: Craig Robinson, Simon Hancock, Roger Tagholm and Steve Ingle
New Dad Steve and our very own Miloslav Mecir Roger made an impressive debut as a pairing in the first match comfortably outplaying the Worcester Park first pair with Steve slamming down some big first serves and Roger's famous angles and lobs working a treat. The only anxious moment came when they missed points to lead 5-1 and then trailed 0-30 at 4-2 but after saving that game they raced away.
Simon and Craig produced the comeback of the season so far in their first match after a slow start saw them trailing 2-5 against the Worcester Park second pair. From there though they hit top gear to win 11 of the next 13 games.
In the second round of matches Steve and Roger put in another good performance to pull away from Worcester Park's second pair before Craig and Simon battled hard to come through an epic and closely first set against the second pair before winning a slightly easier second set.
The results were as follows:
Steve&Roger beat W Park 1st Pair 6-2 6-0
Craig&Simon beat W Park 2nd Pair 7-5 6-2
Steve&Roger beat W Park 2nd Pair 6-4 6-1
Craig&Simon beat W Park 1st Pair 7-6(7-5) 6-3
The next match should be the re-arranged match at Dorking and I will be in touch as soon as I have confirmation from the Dorking Captain but it should be Sunday 5th December.
Kind regards
Chris |

Dear All,
Sadly I have to report that the 5th team fell 3-1 to Banstead Downs III in the rain on Sunday to kick off the 2010/11 Winter Season. But we started last season slowly and it ended well so we shall do it again!
Playing for the team were: Chris Drew, James Reed, Damian McFadden, Terry Oakes
In wet and autumnal conditions we had a historic first pairing of McFadden and Oakes after twenty years and they fought valiantly against the strong Banstead first pair in a tight first set before the opposition pulled away in the second set. Against the second pair James and I fell a double break 0-3 down in about 2 minutes but then both got going to win nine consecutive games and, although we didn't continue the streak to get a bagel, we finished the job off in the second set. (I have to mention the 7th Drew ace of 2010 on set point in the first set!)
Mr Reed and I had a similarly slow start against the Banstead first pair but this time we could not turn it around. We managed to win a couple of tight games to lead 2-0 in the second set and even had a point for a 3-0 lead. Banstead fought back and when we couldn't quite break back in a lengthy seventh game it was all over. In the final match Damian and Terry staged a stirring comeback from 2-6 2-5 down to lead 6-5 in the second set but then couldn't quite wrestle the initiative their way in the tie-break.
The results were as follows:
Damian&Terry lost to Banstead 1st Pair 4-6 0-6
Chris&James beat Banstead 2nd Pair 6-3 6-3
Chris&James lost to Banstead 1st Pair 1-6 2-6
Damian&Terry lost to Banstead 2nd Pair 2-6 6-7(4-7)
Thanks to everyone for playing in conditions that were not ideal. As Yazz said 'The Only Way Is Up'.
Battling for the team next time against Worcester Park II at home on 14th November will be:
First pair - Simon and Craig, Second pair - Steve and Roger
See you on court soon.
Chris
