Table Tennis At Wilton

Table Tennis At Wilton

Wilton runs two table tennis teams in the Wandsworth and District league. The first team plays in division 1 and the second team plays in division 5. Home matches are played in the club house on Friday nights starting at 7.30pm. The standard of play in the first division is very high and in the fifth division the standard is good. Spectators are welcome. A match consists of three against three players who play nine singles matches plus one doubles match at the end. Each division consists of five teams, teams play each other home and away and there is promotion and relegation at Christmas and at end March. The first team is captained by Paul West and the second team is captained by Andy Slough. If you would like to play competitive table tennis, please contact either Paul or Andy.

If you are interested in playing on a casual or social basis, the table is available at most times apart from Friday evening. We have recently purchased a brand new table tennis table and club bats and balls are available if you do not have your own.

Table Tennis: Media go wild, Pundits come unstuck but Wilton start 2012 on High!

Tuesday, 31 January 2012
Results released early in the new year showed that Alan Hansen's prediction did indeed come somewhat unstuck as Ernest Bevin pipped Wilton A to the division 2 title. As both teams finished with the same number of points, this was decided by games difference. However, both teams are promoted to division 2. Felix Wang did extremely well to top the division 2 averages with 100%, while Paul West recorded 93%, Chris Dolphin 50% and Richard Evans 44%.

There was more good news from division 3 where Wilton B won the division by a single point. Mert Kirtelar and his Dad, Nazim were equal top of the averages with 81%, while Richard Cumbley scored 40%. They are promoted to division 2.

In division 4, Wilton C retained their position with a 4th place finish. Emiliano Laghi (48%) and Paul Couper (46%) played most of the matches with Andy Slough (50%) and Ben Geeson playing in 4 and 3 matches respectively.

In the first week of the 2012 restart, Wilton teams continued their march through Chairman Mao's cup competition. On Tuesday, Wilton B defeated underdogs Wilton C in the long awaited all Wilton semi final.Yesterday, Wilton A - with a team of Paul West (capt), Richard Evans and Chris Dolphin giving 6 points away in each game to 24th club B in the quarter final of the same competition - recorded a 5-0 win over their more experienced opponents. This scoreline slightly flattered the home side as in three of the five matches played, games were decided after a 20 all (deuce) situation had been reached.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the match, Paul said:"I'm pleased that Wilton A were able to progress to the semis, knowing that Wilton B are waiting for us in the final. Although our opponents had a combined age of over 200, it was clear that, despite some close games, they needed a few more years practice to overcome us. I know that Wilton table tennis historians are now anxiously awaiting news of our semi-final opponents as the prospect of the first ever all Wilton final comes into view - I'll keep them informed."

Best wishes,
Paul

Table Tennis: Wilton A and the Boys from the Bevin!

Saturday, 03 December 2011
On Tuesday (29 Nov), the Wilton A team of captain Paul West, Chris Dolphin and Richard Evans beat Vale B away by 6-4. Paul won 3, Chris won 2 and then Paul and Chris teamed up to win the doubles at the end of the evening.

The Wandsworth league had earlier ruled that Wilton's match against Ernest Bevin should be rescheduled so that the Ernest Bevin team could attend the international table tennis tournament at the Excel centre in preparation for the Olympics. Wilton therefore took to the table for their second match of the week last night (Friday 2 Dec), with the Wilton team of Paul West, Chris Dolphin and Felix Wang inflicting a defeat on Ernest Bevin for the first time this season. Felix won 3, Paul won 2 and Chris won 1 and then Paul and Chris teamed up to win the doubles (with Felix having departed on a trip to Manchester) to take the match 7-3.

Ernest Bevin is a boys secondary school specialising in sport and were represented by two pupils and their young, attractive Chinese teacher (Miss Higham). It was a clear case of experience overcoming youth.

Wilton resume matches in 2012 with a Chairman's cup match on 13th Jan in which they are giving the opposition a 6 point start (in games to 21).

Speaking to Sky Sports news after Friday's match, Paul said: "We did our homework on our opponents and it paid off. While, the students showed a lot of talent and potential, Felix showed the true class."

In response to questioning about where this left the title race, Paul added:
"At the start of the season, Alan Hansen said 'you win nothing with kids' but this could turn out to be another schoolboy error. Despite last night's result, we are still neck and neck with Ernest Bevin and they have another match left to play, so the destination of the title is far from decided".

Table Tennis: BREAKING NEWS - draw for Chairman Mao's Cup LIVE on Sky Sports

Thursday, 24 November 2011
The draw for the next round of the Chairman's cup was made live on Sky Sports 69 (only available to high net worth individuals) yesterday afternoon, with all ties to be played in the week beginning Monday 9th January in the 21 up, best of 3 sets format.

Remarkably, Wilton B have been drawn against Wilton C in the semi finals, guaranteeing the club another appearance in the final of this illustrious competition. Wilton C will enjoy a 3 point start in this match but Wilton B will enjoy home advantage. Subject to the negotiation of TV rights for this most local of derbies, the match will be played on Tuesday 10th Jan starting at 7.30pm.

Meanwhile, there is still a chance of an all Wilton final as Wilton A will take on 24th club B on Friday 13th Jan for a place in the other semi final. 24th club will enjoy a 6 point start in this match.

Regards,
Paul

Table Tennis: Wilton A crush Y Gardens E

Thursday, 24 November 2011
Wilton A team, represented by captain Paul West, Richard Evans and Chris Dolphin defeated bottom of the table York Gardens E by 9-1 in a league match at home last night (Friday 18th Nov). Paul and Richard won 3 each while Chris won 2. Chris and Richard won the doubles at the end of the evening.

Wilton also took maximum points from York Gardens E when they played them away earlier in the season and the Tooting based club are now strong candidates for relegation.

Next Friday, Wilton play Ernest Bevan in another home match with the two clubs sharing top position at the half way stage.

Speaking to LBC radio after the match, Paul said: "It was good to be able introduce veteran Chinese star, Robin Lee, to his  York Gardens team mates at the beginning of the evening. With bandages on both of his knees, a bandage on his playing (right) arm, a penholder grip, 'funny' rubbers on his bat and a penchant for hitting the ball close to the ceiling, I think it's fair to say he was quite an unconventional opponent. But the boys were more than equal to anything he could throw at us tonight and we ran out comfortable winners in the end, despite some close individual matches."

        Wilton A results so far:

Friday 23 Sept - away to Vale E (cup match) - won 9-0
            Wed 5 Oct - away to Y Gardens E - won 8-2
Wed 12 Oct - away to Ernest Bevan - lost 6-4
            Fri 14 Oct - home to Vale C - won 7-3
            Fri 21 Oct - home to Vale B - won 8-2
            Tue 1 Nov - away to Vale F - won 6-3
            Tue 8 Nov - away to Vale C - won 7-3
            Fri 18 Nov - home to Y Gardens E - won 9-1

            Remaining fixtures:
Fri 25 Nov - home to Ernest Bevan - team: Paul, Felix, Richard
Tue 29 Nov - away to Vale B - team: Paul, Richard, Chris

            Best wishes,
            Paul

Table Tennis: Wilton A Battle in the Chapel 8/11/11
