Table Tennis At Wilton
Wilton runs two table tennis teams in the Wandsworth and District league. The first team plays in division 1 and the second team plays in division 5. Home matches are played in the club house on Friday nights starting at 7.30pm. The standard of play in the first division is very high and in the fifth division the standard is good. Spectators are welcome. A match consists of three against three players who play nine singles matches plus one doubles match at the end. Each division consists of five teams, teams play each other home and away and there is promotion and relegation at Christmas and at end March. The first team is captained by Paul West and the second team is captained by Andy Slough. If you would like to play competitive table tennis, please contact either Paul or Andy.
If you are interested in playing on a casual or social basis, the table is available at most times apart from Friday evening. We have recently purchased a brand new table tennis table and club bats and balls are available if you do not have your own.

Wilton A completed the 2010/11 season with an emphatic 9-1 win over whipping boys Vale D at Wilton last night (Friday 18 March). In the run up to the match, Wilton's medical team had advised that, although Chris Dolphin had declared himself available for selection, it would be unwise to risk his tennis elbow injury in a match of this intensity.
Paul West (capt) called up young, rising star Mert Kirtelar (Wilton B capt) to make his first team debut, playing alongside himself and Richard Evans. Mert made a perfect start, winning all 3 singles matches (including one against a player he had lost to previously). Paul also won his 3 singles and Richard won 2. At the end of evening, Mert teamed up with his Dad (who also plays for Wilton B to win the doubles). This maximum points win gives Wilton A a good chance of promotion following their victory over arch rivals York Gardens last week. However, the final league standings won't be known for a week or two yet and will depend on other results.

Wilton A gave their promotion hopes a massive boost with a 7-3 win over York Gardens at their place tonight (Friday 11 March). Felix Wang was the man of the match for Wilton, winning all 3 singles matches. He was backed up by Paul West (capt) winning 2 singles matches, including one by 11-8 in the deciding 5th game, and by Richard Evans who won his last singles match of the evening to secure Wilton's victory. After that, Felix and Paul teamed up to win the doubles - giving Wilton an extra game if count back becomes relevant for second place.
The word on the street is that while S Mitcham are clear at the top, it is very close for the second promotion place with little to separate Y Gardens and Wilton. It will likely come down to the last matches of the season. Wilton complete their programme with a home match next Friday against Vale D where they will be looking to take maximum points (8-2 win or better). Paul is awaiting a medical report on the injured Chris Dolphin before naming his side for that match.

The second Wilton A vs Wilton B match took place yesterday (Monday 7th March) and proved to be another classic of its genre. The reflexes of the players - drawn from four different countries (China, Poland, Turkey and the UK) - staggered the crowd. This included two enthusiasts rarely seen at Wilton who travelled from the Holborn area to watch the game. One of them wore special glasses, stating the excessive spin applied by the players was not always visible to the naked eye.
Wilton A team of Paul West (capt), Felix Wang and Richard Evans triumphed in the end by 7-3 after a valiant fight from Wilton B, represented by Mert Kirteler, Tomasz Zbiyowski and Richard Cumbley. For Wilton A, all three players won 2 singles matches each and Felix teamed up with Richard at the end of the evening to win the doubles. For Wilton B, Mert won 2 singles and Richard won 1. Scientists are studying their equipment to see whether in fact the ball did stop in mid-air momentarily during Mert and Felix's match.
On Friday, Wilton A will be represented by the same team who will take on York Gardens (away).

For the second match running, Wilton A were blighted by injury. On this occasion, Chris Dolphin played through the pain barrier with a severe tennis elbow problem, alongside the now recovered Richard Evans and Paul West (capt). Their opponents were South Mitcham, the current league leaders. Chris played very well in his first two matches, winning one and losing one but the pain became too much in his final match. He had to retire hurt in a match he was favourite to win. In the other matches, Paul won 2 singles and Paul and Richard won the doubles. Therefore, the match ended in a respectable 6-4 defeat but the injury to Chris almost certainly robbed Wilton of a draw.
For the long awaited return Wilton A vs Wilton B match on Monday (7th March), Paul has named a team of himself, Felix Wang and Richard Evans. Naturally, there is a lot of hype surrounding the match following the table tennis extravangza that occurred in the first match. There is particular interest in the Felix Wang (who did not play in the first match) vs Mert Kirteler (2nd team capt) match where due to the unconventional nature of the player's bats and their extraordinary talent, many experts consider that the ball could do things never seen before in a table tennis match. Some scientists have speculated that the ball could defy the normal laws of physics and possibly even stop in mid-air momentarily.
Best wishes,
Paul |

I am pleased to confirm that the eagerly anticipated return Wilton A vs Wilton B match in the Wandsworth table tennis league will take place on Monday 7th March. Fans will recall that the match was originally scheduled during the Wilton adult and junior tennis tournament that took place during half term last week and therefore had to be postponed.
On police advice, additional temporary seating will be installed in the clubhouse for spectators with full segregation. Wilton A fans should enter by the entrance by the kitchen while Wilton B fans should enter by the entrance near the office.
Many thanks,
Paul |
