Our Annual General Meeting will be held at 7.45 p.m. on Wednesday
9th April. This is an opportunity for you to hear how the club has done
in the past year and to discuss future plans. Please let me know if there are
any items which you would like to have included on the agenda.
We welcome nominations for members who wish to help with the organisation
of the club by serving on the committee. Please indicate on the club notice
board if you wish to propose either yourself or another member for the 2008-9
Committee. Nominations are requested for these roles: Chair, Treasurer, Ladies'
Captain, Mens' Captain, Membership Secretary, Social Events Organiser, Social
Tennis Co-ordinator, Committee Secretary, Club and Grounds Officer.
We are
delighted to inform you that Kim Freebairn will be taking on the role of Wilton
Head Coach. Details of Kim's contract are still being finalised but her
appointment already has the support of the full committee and we intend that all
the membership should have the opportunity to ratify Kim's appointment at the
AGM on Wednesday 9th April. We feel that Wilton now has an excellent,
enthusiastic coaching team:
Wilton staged two extremely successful open junior tournaments in February.
No less than 571 matches were played during the fortnight. The standard of play,
especially in the Week 1 Grade 3 event was particularly high. The star of Week 1
was Zack Evenden of Middlesex who was triumphant in both the Boys 16 and 18
events. One of the highlights of Week 2 was the international final in the Boys
14 singles between Patryk Koscielski of Poland and Tohotom Tiboldi of Hungary.
There were good performances from Wilton members Christa Gecheva who reached the
final of the Girls 18 singles in Week 1 and Kallum and Savannah Challenger who
reached the doubles final in Week 2. Full results for both events are shown on
these links.
Work in the changing rooms is now virtually complete. Our sincere thanks to
Dennis Parker for actively supervising this. I hope that you will agree that the
rooms are now vastly improved. We intend to re-decorate the entry hall
shortly.
JUNIOR TOURNAMENT:
We are holding two open junior tournaments at the club from Mon 11th to Sat
16th Feb and from Mon 18th to Sat 23rd Feb. Both events are fully subscribed
with 240 plus juniors entering for each week-some from as far afield as Cumbria
and Cornwall. The standard, especially in Week 1 (a LTA Grade 3 event) is the
highest we have had for many years. I very much hope you will come along and see
some of the games. Finals will be on the two Saturdays from 10 am to approx 3
pm. You can see the entry lists by going to www.tournaments.org.uk and clicking on
'featured tournaments'. There will be no club play on the Saturdays until approx
3.30pm but other than that members should still be able to play on weekend
evenings after about 7.30pm and also, of course, on Sundays. If matches have
been delayed by rain you may like to ring 8296 9668 to confirm court
availability.
COACHING
I hope to be able to give you updated information on the coaching situation
at the club as soon as possible.
LTA MEMBERSHIP
Apparently 80 Wilton members (out of 210) have joined the new free
LTA membership scheme which puts us in 18th place out of 150 Surrey clubs. We
will receive a refund from Surrey LTA on our affiliation fees if 60% of the club
joins. So if you have not already done so please click on the link below and
sign up. It is a fairly painless procedure and is beneficial to both the club
and yourself!
All courses last for 10 weeks (including a 2 week break from 10th-24th
Feb). The cost is £80 for midweek courses and £100 for the weekend courses.
Courses will have a minimum of 4 and maximum of 8 players. Please let me know if
you wish to sign up. Once accepted you will be asked to pay in full on the date
of your first session.
